I have read somewhere around that he/she is attributed the meaning of «Save Our Souls» (it Saves our souls) but the true meaning this very expressed here with Francisco's summary José Dávila Dorta:
The Titanic threw its CQD and its SOS in Continental Morse (International) that is to say: CQD = -. -.--. - -.. AND SOS =...---... (DE MGY = -... ----. -.--). In 1903 the Italians recommend that it is used as sign of danger a SSSDDD (in morse, clear, because the fonía doesn't still exist). The topic you discusses and when not coming to an agreement he/she decides to leave it for 1906. Seen it, in 1904 Marconi he/she intends that their stations use the CQD like disaster sign. CQD doesn't mean Quickly he/she Eats Distress (they Come Quickly: Disaster). it is Simply a CQ (general Call that one had come imposing between the telegraphers and radioaficionados (Marconi was it), followed by the D=Danger (I am in danger). In 1906 the Conference of Berlin adopts the disaster sign SOE. There were protests because the AND end was only a point and it would rot «to get lost» etc. All suited that it was preferable reutilizar the S leaving it as SOS and discarding, in passing, the American proposal of using «NC» as «Necessity of immediate help. In 1908 it is adopted the SOS officially although the telegraphers instinctively continue using the CQD. They made this way it in their first calls the own Phillips and Braid, of the Titanic, until the Captain Smith tells to Phillips: «A SOS sends, it is the new sign and maybe be its last opportunity to use it». The own Marconi, in the Annual of Telegraphy and Wireless Telephony of 1918 recognizes that SOS opted for its clarity clarity for anyone that listened to it: SOS =...---... (dit-dit-dit-daat-daat-daat-dit-dit-dit) and he/she doesn't have anything to see with «Save Our Souls»,»Save Our Ship»,»Send Our Soccour» neither with anything resemblance. The first CQD of which one has news corresponds to the American ship «Sacred Rosa» of California that emitted it in 1908. The first SOS registered was also emitted in 1908 and he/she made it the vapor Minnehaha that New York went to London and embarrancó in England amid a strong fog. The frequency of the SOS was already the 500 Kilocycles; but the USA didn't officialize the SOS neither that frequency until after the disaster of the Titanic in 1912, and it took even this way a lot of time in being accepted fully. In spite of what we believed, the Titanic didn't throw the last CQD neither neither the first SOS. But it continues being the most famous ship in the history. Another sign of urgency was XXX, with the consideration of less urgent than the SOS. The sign TTT was used as sign of danger to notice of next ice, storms or other sailing problems. Finally the word PRESCRIBES (in Spanish language) it was used when a ship, without doctor on board, needed that from another ship or from earth takes him one to solve some problem in the company. In 1912 they were adopted the 500 kilocycles like frequency of call of international aid officially, for the reasons that we already exposed. A silence of 3 passed minutes was demanded the minutes 15 and 45 after every hour. Something like that happened with the later wave of international aid (even effective) for work in fonía, of 2182 Khz. When finally the fonía, the SOS was imposed it passed MAYDAY to be said, the XXX is PAN and for the TTT the word SECURITE was used, of course in the aid frequency for call in fonía (2182 Khz) already mentioned.
